Agree. I find that MySites are neither good or bad - but like everything else in SharePoint, the feature shouldn't be deployed it if isn't needed. "Needed" is defined in one's business requirements, IMHO, though I fully understand that politics often drives poor design decisions.

Every company/organization is going to approach this topic in a unique manner. Why not start with: "Here is some information, how do we oranize it." rather than "Here is SharePoint, what information can we put into it?" Since this is a SharePoint video/training, perhaps we can further refine the question to: "I have this information, where would I put it, if I were using SharePoint?"

The problem isn't that giving people MySites is bad, the problem is: adoption, quotas, usage. Just because you give people the option of creating a mysite does not mean that they are going to use it. And then there are those who think that 1GB (or 2 or 5) is not enough, because they want to upload video clips, documents, pictures and who knows what else. And if top managment doesn't set policy, and some people use it and others don't, can you achieve maximum effectiveness? How do you get people to communicate if they aren't all on the same channel? There's linkedIn, Facebook, Google+, and the app of the month club.....how do you get everyone on the same page...or site? That's the challenge.
